The Wow Laos! Journey  /

Wow Laos!, a Youth Leadership Community Programme (YLCP) supported by the National Youth Council (NYC), is one of the flagship projects under Tiong Bahru Community Centre Youth Club. This overseas service-learning project was initiated in 2012 by youth volunteers passionate about making a difference in both the local and overseas communities. Wow Laos! holds the long-term aim of sustainability and continuity in the Laotian community that it engages with.

The first Wow Laos! team embarked on a project to Na’ Phong village in Vientiane, Laos, where they sought to improve the education infrastructure of the village primary school through a construction project. On the second trip in 2013, the team headed back to the same village to continue with what the first team left off, and assisted in laying electrical wires within the newly constructed school building. A more conducive studying environment was thus created as lights and fans can be powered for the primary school students. The team also shared knowledge in English and hygiene with the students and teachers. In June 2014, Wow Laos! III headed to Tang Kham village in Vientiane, Laos to embark on a water assistance project. The project involved the construction of four bored wells and common water distribution points, to allow easy access to clean water for the villagers.

In hope to sum up the service learning experience and increase awareness of the situation in the villages that Wow Laos! serves, the Wow Laos! III team started a photo essay series titled "Everyday, Tang Kham".
